Meet Alva’s Girl Films Founder……
[[……….MIRANDA POWERS ]]
Introducing: Alva’s Girl Films, named after my Great-Grandmother and I, in celebration of our special bond.
Nothing is better than a good cup of ice tea and a thrilling horror movie. If you would have asked me ten years ago if I felt the same, I would have defiantly called my older self a traitor. I grew up terrified of everything, as most children abused by their fathers are.
True horror. Real horror. Lived for years, until I changed my own story.
And I ran. To my Mother. Who I was told was a horrible harlot. Well, if harlots are kind and caring people who work hard and protect their loved ones then I wanna be called a harlot too!
And I started to see….
…… what it could be like…..
……to be myself.
Wow. I was AWKWARD!!
I navigated high school rebuilding a person who thought it was normal to hide their scars. Building friendships with people who accepted my quacky self and avoiding my crushes for fear of humiliation. I remember being invited to a birthday party- I was never invited to them! And we watched a horror movie.
Afterwards, I slept with the lights on for about a month straight and would sneak into my older sister’s room to sleep on her floor much to her protest.
Horror was not for me. I didn’t want to feel scared. I had enough of that already!
……….
………..
And then it happened. After college in that pivotal “what the fuck am I doing with my life” phrase, I saw a horror film with my husband. And I was hooked. Why did they answer the door? Can demons really do that? How can a person loose that much blood and not pass out?
And…. Were are the female leads?
Okay, okay, I get it. Different times. And there are horror and thrillers with female leads that are phenomenal. And horror written by men can be, and is, thrilling and amazing. But I kept asking myself…
If the story came from a female mind how would these stories be different?
If the director was a female how would she create it?
How would she shoot it?
How would she edit it?
How would she deal with late cast and crew, crafty, sound, lighting, health emergencies, props, and script supervising?
And that is what I am setting out to find out. How can a team of predominantly women change the history of horror and thriller films.
I may not have all the answers now, but I assure you- Alva’s Films will constantly strive to find them.
